Video doorbell/baby monitoring system solution

June 01, 2022

The seemingly unrelated solutions of video doorbells and baby monitoring systems provide the same functionality in terms of transmitting video and audio between different locations, with almost identical needs in this regard. They have some subtle differences, but the main difference is the power supply that is connected and supplied. Video doorbells can be wired or wirelessly connected, while baby monitoring systems typically use only wireless connections. If you integrate a Video Doorbell into your home or building infrastructure, you can provide Power over Ethernet, 24V AC, or any other offline voltage. The core of the system is a low-power embedded processor - DM3xx, OMAP-L13x or AM35xx. When implementing real-time video display (no video encoding), the total system power consumption is less than approximately 100mW. Even with full video encoding (required for compression or storage), the total system power consumption is still less than 400mW.

The kernel subsystem includes:

Processor - Performs video and audio processing and synchronization and controls the user interface.

Image Processing - The VPFE (Video Processing Front End) image processing capabilities provided in the aforementioned processors can reduce overall system cost because advanced video optimization capabilities allow the use of less expensive sensor modules. The VPFE and display subsystem (also known as the video processing back end - VPBE) can fully satisfy the LCD or TV display. VPBE can also produce composite video output for analog TV and display menus in user-controlled live video.

Video Encoding - To reduce packet transmission, these systems must have MPEG4 and H.264 video/audio compression to consume as little bandwidth as possible. Video compression is also important for storing video to HDD or SD/MMC cards. In addition, H.264 provides less compressed video than MPEG4, while degrading video quality after decompression.

Network Stack - Allows users to transfer data over an Ethernet connection. Both the DM335 and DM355 require an external Ethernet MAC and PHY, while all other processors have an onboard MAC.

Audio - Two audio codecs for the video doorbell/baby monitoring system; one for the acquisition side and one for the display. The DM365 has a built-in mono audio codec, while all other processors require an external audio codec for audio input/output. The external audio codec can be connected to all embedded processors included in this block diagram via the McBSP port.

Memory - Stores execution code, data/parameters, video, and sound. DDR2 memory is often used most often with video processors. In response to this situation, we have dedicated memory power devices that provide a variety of required power rails for DDR, DDR2, DDR3 and DDR3L memories.

Power Conversion - AC/DC wall adapters are used for baby monitoring system applications, while ready-to-use residential/building offline power supplies are used for visual doorbells. Other power options include Power over Ethernet (PoE) that can be connected using a wired Ethernet.

Optional equipment – Connect to a remote display, notebook, digital video camera or single board computer with Human Machine Interface (HMI), depending on customer requirements. A visual doorbell that displays images remotely and stores data on the hard drive, providing new functionality to end users. Connecting the system to the computing platform further improves the user experience.
